**Yes — Framer works well for most architecture studios.** It is built for cinematic, work-led sites. Projects are content you add. Inquiries arrive with a brief attached. Nothing needs maintaining.

Two honest caveats. Very heavy CMS builds want a deeper engine, and this site's flagship studio template is not a Framer template — more on both below.

## What studio sites actually need

Clients arrive with three questions, usually after a referral:

1. **Is the work good?** A work index that proves it.
2. **Can they do my project?** Services, scale, and process.
3. **How do I start?** An inquiry that arrives with site, program, budget, and timeline.

Everything else supports those three. Judge any platform against them.

## Where Framer fits for studios

**Cinematic by default.** Scroll choreography, page transitions, and full-bleed imagery are part of the Framer toolkit. For a studio, the site should feel designed — because it is.

**Projects as content.** Add a project as an entry: images, text, typology, year. Filtering and detail pages update themselves. A new commission goes live in an afternoon.

**Inquiries with a brief.** The form carries what the visitor was looking at — project, service, budget range — into your inbox or CRM.

**Speed and no maintenance.** Pages serve fast on phones. No plugins, no updates, no security patches.

**Edits by the team.** A new award or team member is an edit, not a developer ticket.

## Where Framer doesn't fit

Worth knowing before you commit, because these are the cases where studios regret it:

- **Hundreds of projects with rich relationships.** Materials, products, publications, press — connected data wants a deeper CMS. Astro + Sanity or Webflow's CMS handle it better.
- **You want the team editing in a real CMS.** Sanity's Visual Editing lets you click the live page and edit content in place, with drafts and history. Framer's editor is excellent, but it is a design tool first.
- **You want to own the stack.** A self-hosted Astro build runs on your infrastructure, on Cloudflare Workers, with no platform between you and the site.
- **You need eight languages on day one.** Framer's localization is a paid add-on, and translation is the real cost either way.

## One thing to know about my templates

I build and sell the templates on this site, so weigh that. The flagship studio template, [Southward](/templates/southward/), is **not** a Framer template. It is Astro + Sanity: seven page templates, Visual Editing pre-wired, cinematic scroll on GSAP and Lenis, $99 one-time, deploying to Cloudflare Workers.

That is not a contradiction — it is the honest split:

- **Choose Framer** when you want a visual builder, no maintenance, and a site live this month. It covers the shape above beautifully.
- **Choose Southward** when you want the CMS workflow (Visual Editing, drafts, structured content) or full ownership, and you have basic dev comfort or a developer.

Both routes are on this site, and both get the same [quality standards](/quality-standards/).

## What it costs

Framer's free plan publishes on a framer.website subdomain. A custom domain needs a paid plan: **Basic is $10/month and Pro is $30/month, billed yearly, as of October 2026**. Southward is $99 one-time plus hosting — near-free on Cloudflare's free tier. The full end-to-end picture is in [what an architecture studio website costs](/blog/architecture-studio-website-cost/).

## Verdict

For a studio that wants a designed, cinematic site without a build or a maintenance bill, Framer clears the bar. It does the portfolio and the inquiry flow well, and the caveats are narrow: deeper CMS builds and CMS-editing workflows want another tool. [Start from a template](/best/studio-framer-templates/) — or [Southward](/templates/southward/) if the Astro route is the one that fits.
